This open hallway is acting as a black hole for sound. It is close to a perfect absorber, where no sound is reflected. This can be a real problem as it is adjacent to the listener. It will sound as if much less sound is coming from this side of the room. One clear solution would be to put in a doorway, in place of the hallway. However, this may not be practical for some people, and other solutions would have to be evaluated.
